Blogmas Day 2 – Cute Vintage Inspired Christmas Outfits

Today has been a busy one, this morning I finished packing for our weekend away. I seriously hate packing, I’m really bad at planning my outfits in advance, so picking everything I need for 3 days is surprisingly challenging! I also had to finish packing for the girls, who are staying with their grandparents for the weekend. Once I was finally packed and on the road I was far more relaxed and so excited to spend my birthday weekend with Rob.

As I mentioned yesterday I’m slowly getting into the Christmas spirit and I’ve definitely been admiring some of my friends Christmas themed outfits. I thought I’d share some of my favourite Christmas themed clothing today. The vintage reproduction brands have really delivered this year and there are so many things I love.

lindy-bop-christmas-dressesGilda Dress – £38 – Sinead Dress – £30 – Both Lindy Bop

Which are your favourites? My mum bought me the Paris Print skirt for my birthday and it is absolutely gorgeous! One of the things I like about wearing vintage style clothes, is that you can wear them every year. I know my skirt will be making an appearance for many Decembers to come.

1920s Speakeasy Style – Lindy Bop Silver Screen Review

$

Recently I’ve been a little obsessed with the 1920s. Historically it’s one of my favourite eras to read about and everything from the roles of women to the drastically changing fashions fascinates me. I’ve been longing for a 20s themed outfit for absolutely ages, so when Lindy Bop launched their beautiful new Silver Screen range I was so excited to try one of the gorgeous dresses.

lindy-bop-silver-screen-reproduction-1920s-dress-reviewI chose the stunning Everly gold embellished dress. I absolutely love the colour and the classic sequin and bead details. It’s just so gorgeous and elegant. To go with it I chose a faux fur stole and some lovely t-bar shoes which are also from Lindy Bop. I finished off the outfit with a turban that I picked up recently at a car boot sale.

lindy-bop-silver-screen-everly-1920s-dress-reviewThe dress arrived beautifully packed in a box, because of the fragile glass beads it was carefully packaged with plenty of tissue and bubble wrap to protect it. As soon as I opened the box I was amazed at the beautiful quality of the dress. It has a sheer layer over a gold lining and the sequins and glass beads are firmly stitched into the fabric. The dress is quite heavy which makes it hang perfectly.

lindy-bop-silver-screen-1920s-beaded-dress-reviewI opted for my usual size 14 and the fit was absolutely perfect, so I’d say these come up true to size. The dress fastens with a concealed side zip, which really helps with the lovely fit.

lindy-bop-everly-flapper-dress-and-faux-fur-stoleThe fur stole went really well with the dress, it fastens with a hook and eye at the front. It adds a nice extra layer when its cold and wearing the two together was perfect for the season. This would make a great outfit for a Christmas party or winter wedding. If I go to any 20s themed nights or events, I’ll definitely be wearing this dress.

lindy-bop-gene-shoes-reviewI was also really impressed with the shoes. They were beautifully made with quite a cushioned lining, making them quite comfortable to wear all day.

Overall I am really impressed with all the items I tried and I can’t wait to try more dresses from the Silver screen range.

Outfit Details

‘Everly’ Soft Gold Embellished Dress – £107 (currently on offer at £75)

Faux Fur Stole – £16 (currently on offer at £8)

Gene Round Toe Tap Style Shoes – £22 (currently on offer at £12)

Blogmas Day 16 – A Year In Vintage Outfits

$

This year I’ve shared more outfits on here than any other year. I’ve really enjoyed embracing my own style so much. In many ways I feel like I’ve come out my shell a bit more. Today I looked back on all my outfit pictures from the last year and I can see a big change in myself.

2016-in-vintage-outfitsFirstly I lost quite a bit of weight this year. I don’t really talk about things like body image and weight on the blog at all. Having been everything from a size 6 to a 16 in my adult life, it has never been something that has impacted on my happiness. But looking back on my pictures over the year I am proud that I worked hard to lose a stone and feel healthier and more comfortable and of course I’m happy to fit into some of my dresses that were too tight last year.

2016-in-vintage-outfits-2I also feel very happy and content and far more confident to go out wearing whatever the hell I like and not being afraid if people notice that my outfit wouldn’t look out-of-place 60 years ago. I used to like to fade into the background and didn’t like people commenting on my clothes. I think it has a lot to do with turning 30 last December, I just feel older wiser and more comfortable to always be me.

2016-in-vintage-outfits-3I also made a lot of friends with similar interests this year. I used to absolutely hate meeting new people and was far too shy to go to a meet up with people I didn’t know. Everytime I said yes to going to an event it got easier and by getting past that anxiety, I have met some wonderful people who love vintage clothes too. We definitely encourage each other not only to be ourselves, but also to spend way to much money on gorgeous dresses (you know who you are!)

2016-in-vintage-outfits-4I also started doing vintage styles on my hair a lot more this year. Before I’d always had the attitude that I was a modern person wearing vintage clothing. I wasn’t really trying to recreate a look from the past, I just really liked the clothes. This year I got a bit more geeky and started doing more vintage hair and make-up and I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s also been easier now the kids are a bit older and I have a bit more me time to perfect my hair and make-up!

2016-in-vintage-outfits-5I’m definitely more of a summer person and I loved wearing lots of pretty dresses when the weather was warmer. I also really enjoying finding great locations to take outfit pictures. I always try to go somewhere interesting where I can have a look around and also stop for a slice of cake and a cup of tea.

2016-in-vintage-outfits-6I also discovered that the park 5 minutes from my house has some great spots for photos, who knew! I clearly really like this particular spot, as I used it in 3 outfits posts in a row!

2016-in-vintage-outfits-7In the Autumn and Winter, I usually move away from classic mid-century looks and embrace the 60s and 70s a lot more. I like going for comfy clothes and darker colours. I also really love Autumn walks and so flat shoes and warmer layers come out a bit more.

2016-in-vintage-outfits-8My favourite outfit of the year, would have to be the 20s inspired Lindy Bop dress I wore a couple of weeks ago. I’ve also read heaps of history books about the 20s this year and feel really inspired to visit the decade through my clothes a lot more. I have a suitcase of old family photos with a lot of pictures from the 20s and I’d love to use them as inspiration for creating more 20s day looks. Expect to see a lot more hopping between the eras next year.

Some of my favourite outfits of the year have never made it onto the blog. Mostly because I was busy doing something else and there was no time to get decent pictures. I’ve shared so many outfits on Instagram that aren’t here. So I thought I’d show you a few of those too in a post later this week.

Also I wanted to mention that I’m determined to complete Blogmas this year, however I have a lot going on at the moment with work and the kids and other things that have to come before blogging. You may notice that my posts are getting published all over the place and that’s because I am mostly writing in the middle of the night or finishing a day’s post the following day! As I’m doing this challenge for me to see if I can I’m just going to do my best!

Keeping it Casual in Collectif Dungarees

As well as wearing lots of beautiful vintage dresses and skirts, I love practical clothes that I can wear to run around with the kids. I thought it would be nice to share some of my casual everyday outfits on here, because I definitely don’t get dressed up every day! One of my favourite casual outfits is my Collectif Denise dungarees with a comfy jumper and a pair of converse. I wore this outfit for a muddy walk with Rob and Lila and not only was it comfortable it was also nice and warm on a chilly winter afternoon.

Collectif DungareesI love that these are a slightly more glamorous twist on a classic dungaree shape, with their sweetheart neckline and fitted shape. The dungarees fasten with a side zip, which gives them a really nice fit.

Collectif Denise DungareesThey are made from a stretch denim, so they are really comfortable and easy to move around in. They’re absolutely perfect for days spent outdoors, or for a cute casual look. I’m looking forward to wearing them in the summer with a little white tee and a pair of sandals.

Vintage style Dungarees^ When your kid makes you giggle while taking outfit pics!

I went for a size 14 in them and they come up pretty true to size. If in doubt, use the size guide on the Collectif website.

My hair has finally got long enough to wear it up more, so I wore it in a simple bun with pinned up plaits at the front, which only takes about 5 minutes to do and makes a simple style a bit more vintage.

Let me know if you’d like to see more of my everyday casual outfits alongside my usual ones and I’ll see what I can do.

Cath Kidston Minnie Mouse Dress OOTD

Today’s post features a dress that was on the top of my wishlist for a long time, before it finally found its way to my wardrobe. The Cath Kidston and Disney collaboration featuring Mickey and Minnie was long anticipated and as soon as I saw the two dresses that would be in the collection I knew I had to have them!

Cath Kidston Disney Minnie Mouse DressHaving already gone through the drama of buying the Winnie the Pooh dress a few weeks earlier, I knew that getting the dress as far as my basket would be a struggle. So I signed up to the advance preview list and as soon as my email came with the password, I was on the Cath Kidston website. Unfortunately despite my best efforts I only managed to get one of the dresses I wanted, before they all sold out. That was the Mickey in London dress, which I will also feature on here soon.

Cath Kidston Minnie Mouse DressAlmost instantly the dresses started to appear on e Bay at crazy prices. I find it really unfair when people bulk buy limited edition items and then put them on e Bay. So I gave up on ever owning this dress. Until a few days ago when I got an email saying a few more were in stock, so I instantly bought one and two days later, there it was in my hands!

Disney Mini Mouse Cath Kidston DressThe dress will really come into its own in the summer when I can wear it on its own with some sandals, but for now I’ve been wearing it with a long sleeved top underneath, with tights and ankle boots. The dress is made from a lovely thick textured cotton and fastens at the side with an invisible zip. Like all my Cath Kidston dresses the quality is absolutely lovely. I usually try to not spend a fortune on clothes, but Cath Kidston dresses are one thing I like to splurge on because they fit well, wash like a dream and last ages. This one cost £70.

Minnie Mouse Cath Kidston DressMy only qualm with CK dresses is the length, I find them a little short on both the body and the skirt. This is mostly because I’m used to wearing original vintage and reproduction dresses and skirts, which usual sit on or just below the knee. But I guess its nice to have a change and its not really put me off any of the lovely designs so far.

Cath Kidston navy Polka Dot Spots Minnie Mouse DressAmazingly there are still a few of these in stock after the original sell out. They’re not easy to find on the site so use this link to go straight to the dress. You can see the whole Disney collection here.

Did you buy anything from the collaboration? What were your favourite pieces?

Happy in Florals with Dolly and Dotty

It may be absolutely freezing outside, but in my head its time to start planning outfits for Spring. I have acquired a few new dresses in anticipation of a warmer spell and one of those is the gorgeous May dress from Dolly and Dotty.

Dolly and Dotty Blue Floral Dress Review The dress is made from a lovely light cotton and has a pretty gathered bust and waist and a full skirt. I really like the wrap style at the front. The floral print is both classic and pretty and I think this would be perfect for a Spring vintage look.

May Swing Dress in Blue from Dolly and DottyI got the dress in my usual size 14 and I found it came up a little bit small at the waist. It fastened fine, but felt a little tight. So it might be worth sizing up in this one if you plan to eat a big lunch (which I always do).

Dolly and Dotty May Swing Dress ReviewThe dress is fully lined, which I always really like, especially when I’m wearing a dress with tights. I was very happy with the quality and as a bonus, the dress comes with two matching belts, which I decided not to wear with the dress as I quite like keeping it simple.

Dolly and Dotty OOTDAt £34.99 the dress is a great price and is perfect for creating a classic 50s style look. The dress also comes in a huge range of prints and colours and I would love to pick up a darker coloured one too.

I wore the dress with an original 50s necklace, black tights and Hotter shoes.

Check out the full range of dresses on the Dolly and Dotty website.

*Thank you to Dolly and Dotty for sending me this dress for the purposes of review. All opinions as always are my own.

The Perfect Pink Dress for Spring with Laura Ashley

$

At this time of year, I can’t help looking forward to the warmer months ahead. I absolutely cannot wait to leave the cold weather behind and start enjoying everything that Spring has to offer. Wardrobe wise I am more than ready to hang up my winter coats and start wearing my favourite dresses.

Laura Ashley Pink Dress 1Todays outfit is perfect for the transition between warm and cold. This lovely dress from Laura Ashley has a high neck and long sleeves making it perfect for when the weather is still chilly, but Spring is in the air. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it at their press day last year and couldn’t wait for it to come in stock.

Laura Ashley Pink Dress 2The colour is absolutely gorgeous, I love grown up classic dusky pinks, which go well with everything. I’ve paired it here with black tights and a hat along with my Orla Kiely shoes, for a warmer option. I love the classic lines of the dress, which pays homage to the classic 50s fit and flare style.

Pink Laura Ashley Dress 5The best part of this dress for me is the little details. At the waist there a stitched in pleats, which make the drape of the skirt absolutely beautiful. The dress fastens with concealed buttons and has a tie detail at the neck. It also has a tie belt and I love the way the bows dress up the simple design. The length is also perfect and on me, sits just below the knee

Laura Ashley Pink Dress 4The dress is made from a super soft very high quality cotton. It feels absolutely lovely to wear. I love the simple and chic design and it is the perfect classic addition to my wardrobe. I went for my usual size 14 and found the fit to be spot on. I think the style and colour are very versatile and this could be styled so many different ways throughout the year.

Laura Ashley Pink Dress 3The dress is also available in a light blue denim, which I also really like. The dress is usually priced at £95 but is currently on offer at £66.50, which is a great price for the beautiful quality. This is definitely an item that will get a lot of wear and will stay in my wardrobe for many years.

I am really impressed with most of the offering from Laura Ashley this season, many of the designs have vintage influences and the designers have looked back at the archives for inspiration.

Find the dress on the Laura Ashley website.

Returning To The 70s For Spring With Laura Ashley

$

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have seen me share a few pictures of todays gorgeous dress. I have already written about it for the Laura Ashley blog and everything about it is fabulous!

Laura Ashley Floral Ruffle Dress 2A few months ago I went to the Laura Ashley press day and saw so many gorgeous things that appeal to my love of vintage and retro clothes. For this season Laura Ashley have looked back to their archives for inspiration and this collection really does pay homage to the companies best days. As I’ve mentioned many times I adore the 70s look and all the romantic flowing fabrics and floral prints, this dress really epitomises that for me.

Laura Ashley Floral Ruffle Dress 4The Pink Floral Ruffle Dress has a high neck with a pussy bow detail at the neck as well as plenty of retro ruffles. It has gathered sleeves and an elasticated waist which is neatly hidden behind a classic tie belt. The dress falls mid calf, which is a little longer than I usually wear, but perfect for wearing with some knee-high boots. The ones I’m wearing are from Dune and were kindly leant to me by Fay (the bestie).

Laura Ashley Floral Ruffle Dress 6Fit wise, I went for a size 14 as usual and the fit was great. I didn’t have any problems with gaping at the bust and the elasticated waist was just right, but would also add a little flexibility if you’re between sizes. The dress is made from polyester crepe and doesn’t need ironing, which I appreciated as I seem to spend most of my time glued to the iron!

Laura Ashley Floral Ruffle Dress 3As the dress has quite a busy design and print, I kept accessories to the absolute minimum and only brightened the look up with a hair flower from Scarlet Ribbons. I wore my hair in a simple messy Gibson roll, I think the dress is nice with an up-do as its shows off all the details, although it would also look good with some 70s style waves. As the weather gets warmer I will probably wear the dress with a pair of wedges instead of boots, making it a great transitional piece as the seasons change.

The dress costs £110, but is currently on offer for £88 and is available on the Laura Ashley website.

*Thank you to Laura Ashley for sending me this dress for the purposes of review. All opinions as always are my own.

Lindy Bop Gilda Shirt Dress Review

$

0

It’s been a while since I bought anything from Lindy Bop, mostly because my wardrobe is pretty full at the moment and I’ve been very good at resisting temptation. However their recent collection of fun novelty prints has definitely caught my attention. Back in December when my brother asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I knew exactly what I wanted and I sent him in the direction of the Alaska Print Gilda dress.

The Gilda dress is a lovely vintage style shirt dress, made from a thick slightly stretchy cotton. It comes in a lovely selection of novelty border prints. Linda Bop has gone a bit crazy for novelty prints recently. But I really like most of them and its a great change from the polka dots and cherries that seemed to be on everything a couple of years ago.

The dress is really lovely quality for the price and I love that as well as having buttons at the front, it also has a concealed side zip, which gives the dress a lovely fit. My only complaint would be that on me the dress is a little short in the body, I could do with the waist starting a little lower, but I don’t think it detracts from its overall loveliness.

The sizing on this dress is pretty spot on, I’m quite a standard size 14 and the dress works really well on me. I love that there is enough room in the bust, that it sits perfectly on me with no gaping. The dress is available up to a size 26.

I’ve worn it here with my vintage lucite necklace and my new Hotter Donna shoes, which are now available in lots of lovely spring colours. I’ll be blogging more about them soon.

Since this is quite a wintery print, the dress isn’t currently available in this option. The Alaska print is still available in a skirt and there are lots of lovely new prints in the Gilda dress. I popped some pictures of the current offering below, I absolutely love the Spring colours on the bicycle print dress.

I’ve got my eye on the San Francisco print at the moment, but I really love all of them. Which design is your favourite?
